Happy old days....Happy World Wildlife Day, 2014

Lately, I have been having those moments where I keep thinking of how awesome my childhood life was. Ooh, those were the days. Growing up in a village that was full of life is something I can never afford now. Don’t get me wrong. By ‘full of life’ I mean everything around me felt, smelled and tasted freshness…from the tiniest of the creatures in the grass around our home to the big snakes in a nearby bush…from the clean stream a few meters from our house that was ever recharged to the crystal clear lake that flowed a few kilometers away. The birds would joyfully sing their tunes every morning as villagers woke up to fend for their living. Not that ‘fending for a living’ was something to sweat so much for, no! The soils were always fertile and the weather was timely and perfect! The seasonal calendar never lied…the rains never pulled a trick on farmers. So they undeniably tended their lands and crops, passionately took care of their livestock. The result would be a bounty harvest and more than enough animal produce!  You see, this always seemed like an indisputable ideal situation…everyday was a climax! There was enough food to go around and a perfect environment to produce more. I always sense a priceless sense of harmony within ecosystems!  Rivers and streams literally oozed purity…the lakes and oceans were clearly blue and the soils of the earth bragged of fertility. Those were the days when the bushes and forests were so think that the faunas never begged. They were well protected!

I hope that we all reflect on the beauty of diversity and retrace our destructive habits. Wildlife, like human life, is so precious. They all long for a serene environment. Where they will eat, play, socialize and rest with very minimal destruction. Trees enrich our lives in ways that we may not comprehend. To be concerned about those who will come after is to plant and tend a tree (s). If you can’t plant or tend one then don’t cut it! A tree has a right to live too save for its silence. By protecting the wild we create a boomerang effect. A result of which is a sustained ecosystem that is balanced at all levels! Let us be human enough and protect live…let us be conscious of our acts and rethink our strategies as we progress economically, we need to create an environment that will allow us to even progress further.

Happy World Wildlife Day!
